I just visited the Hidden Hearts wbsite, and it was interesting to see year reasons why Kikyou should not be hated.
Well, here's some of my reasons why Kikyou should not be hated... (Possible Spoilers)
In no particular order, reasons why people hate Kikyou...
1: Kikyou tried to drag Inuyasha to hell with her
I won't deny that she did try to drag Inuyasha to hell, but consider the circumstances. Kikyou died hating Inuyasha for betraying her, but because she loved him, she followed him in death. When she was resurrected by Urasue, she would be resurrected with her hatred of Inuyasha (because you can't change your feelings when you are dead). After her resurrection, there was no opportunity to tell her the truth. The way Inuyasha spoke to her ("Go back inside Kagome") sounded to Kikyou like Inuyasha wanted her to die. Isn't it natural to want to return those feelings?
Kagome told Kikyou that Naraku is the true enemy, but Kikyou pays no attention. Kagome and Kikyou never really met before (when Kikyou was resurrected, Kagome was unconcious) so why should Kikyou listen to the words of a stranger?
Kikyou's situation is pretty similar to that of Sango's. Both were tricked by Naraku into hating Inuyasha and both tried to kill Inuyasha at the beginning.
This incident happens early in the series (around episode 22-23). It seems unfair to judge a character by what they did early in the series. If you were to watch all the episodes, you will see that dragging Inuyasha to hell is not Kikyou's goal anymore (her goal now is to rid the world of Naraku). If you justify your hatred of Kikyou by saying "She tried to drag Inuyasha to hell" it only goes to show how limited your knowledge of Inuyasha is.
2: Kikyou interferes with Kagome and Inuyasha's relationship
The ultimate goal of a majority of Kagome lovers is to see Kagome and Inuyasha get together. First of all, relationships in Japanese stories usually take a long time to develop, unlike American stories where a character can get laid by someone they just met. This explains why Westerners are frustrated at the rate in which relationships develop in anime/manga.
I have never seen/read an episode/chapter in which Kikyou is actively trying to interfere with Kagome and Inuyasha. It is Inuyasha's inability to put the past behind him which slows down the progress of the Kagome/Inuyasha relationship. Some Kagome lovers would say that the ideal solution is for Kikyou to die or go far far away. However, both Kikyou and Inuyasha have the same goal: to destroy Naraku, so their paths are bound to cross every now and then.
Kikyou probably was jealous of Kagome, but as the series progressed, Kikyou begins to accept the relationship between Kagome and Inuyasha. This is just a guess, but I think Kikyou intends to return to her death, and with the knowledge that Inuyasha didn't betray her, she is happy with letting Inuyasha live.
3: Kikyou tried to kill Kagome
Another event which happens in the beginning of the series (around episode 32-33 or Viz Volume 13). What happened is that Kagome was about to fall into a crack in the ground which was created by Naraku. Kikyou comes along and uses her soul stealing demons (I don't know what they're called) to hold Kagome up in the air. After taking the Shikon shards from Kagome, Kikyou gives permission to the soul stealing demons to release Kagome (Kagome: "She's going to let me die").
I don't fully understand this myself. Kikyou said that she was merely taking the Shikon shards from her because Kagome's life was in danger due to the fact that she was carrying the shards. She also said to Kagome (before Inuyasha came along) that Kagome was her reincarnation, and that only one incarnation was needed in this world. Either way, this happened early in the series and Kikyou has changed. In fact, Kikyou helps Kagome more than once later in the series.
4: Kikyou gave the Shikon shards to Naraku
Kikyou took the Shikon shards from Kagome and gave them to Naraku. Why? Kikyou said (to herself) "Naraku, go gather shards, and when you have completed the Shikon no Tama, I will send you to hell". This implies that Kikyou has a plan to destroy Naraku which involves Naraku possessing the entire Shikon no Tama. She didn't give the shards to Naraku because she liked Naraku, or wanted Naraku to get stronger and kill Inuyasha. She did it as part of her plan to destroy Naraku. What is her plan? When Naraku is cut by the Tessaiga, he can merely pull himself together as if nothing happened. So Kikyou intend to have Naraku fuse with the complete Shikon no Tama and then she will purify the jewel along with Naraku, resulting in the destruction of Naraku's soul. Therefore Kikyou giving shards to Naraku is done for the good of everyone.
4: Kikyou is evil
The reasons behind thinking that Kikyou is evil is usually based on what I mentioned earlier (Kikyou trying to kill Inuyasha and Kagome). Is Kikyou really evil? Sure she killed that monk who tried to send her back to death, but just like the examples that I stated before, this happened early in the series, and Kikyou has changed. She loves children (and children love her) and helps out injured soldiers. How can you call that 'evil'?
5: Kikyou won't stay dead
Kikyou didn't ask to be resurrected. The first time she was resurrected, Urasue used Kikyou's ashes and gravesoil to bring her to life. The second time Kikyou was resurrected, it was Kagome's choice, Kagome was given the choice to save Kikyou or not because Kagome was the only one who could save Kikyou.
What do Kagome lovers want Kikyou to do? Kill herself? I'm pretty sure Rumiko Takahashi has some sort of purpose for Kikyou, why else would she allow Kikyou to be resurrected twice.
