A night with no moon.
A shell with no soul.
A life with no meaning.
'Life?' What an unsuitable word to describe such existance, she thought.
Slender, serpent-like creatures dance in an enticing and deadly way around a lonely, feminine shape. She raises one pale hand toward the night demons, allowing the bright, glowing orbs they carry to reach her cold being.
"Gomen nasai..." - she whispers sadly, as a couple of those lightballs go through her garments and skin, finding rest inside her body.
'Rest?' That was merely an unsuccessful attempt to set herself at ease.
Every night it was the same routine: the Shinidama-Chuu would approach, deliver the miko her refill of souls and go away, leaving her alone once more... Alone with the anguished cries of the dead women whose essence was needed to keep Kikyou 'alive'. The shrine maiden was tortured by the desperate shouts for freedom every often, but she had to endure the suffering if she really wanted to avenge her own death.
Gesturing for her helpers to leave, she trudges to a tree and quietly takes a seat under one of its many leafy branches and flutters her eyes closed, resting her back against its tall trunk.

The cool breeze filtered through his silver tresses, sifty golden oculars glittering from beneath unkempt bangs. He had paused, mid-step beneath the high stone arch that marked the entry-way of his private garden. He was just coming back from his nightly walk. There was a familiar scent in the air. Not entirely the scent of death, for it did not smell of rotting corpses, but rather the far more disgusting odor of an earthen mixture; graveyard soil hardened to clay and bones.
The miko was near. It took him several seconds to register this fact, though his brain knew it to be truth the moment he had detected her smell. Was she in the immediate vicinity? ...No. But, she was indeed near. And for this, he smiled a rather eerie sort of smile.
He had taken a liking to the miko; not a very strong liking, mind you, for he could really care less about her, but she had her ways with Rin, and Sesshoumaru's inner-heart had gotten the better of him and he had somewhat thawed in her prescense. That was not to say, his eyes narrowed, that he even enjoyed her company. It was to say, though, that for a ningen filly, she was not the most horrible of companions. After living with that insufferable toad for so long - his smile became wry at this next thought - he might have even preffered Inu-Yasha's company over Jaken's.
Shaking out of his reverie, he turned those surprisingly soulful orbs heavenwards, observing the night sky. The clouds had gathered, and they were unusually gray...A rain was soon to be upon them, and by the looks of it, more than just a shower. He decided to hasten his return to the castle, to ensure that Rin was safely tucked in for the night. But something in the back of his mind nagged him, til he realized with some shock, that he also questioned the miko's safety.
But, it was not his affair, so the thought quickly disappeared. After all, it was also none of his concern. Just as he should not expect her to give him a second thought, he did not expect himself to care for her. So, quite peaceful at mind, he entered the rather forboding halls of his gloomy home, wondering just what the night had in store for a taiyoukai such as himself.
After all, Sesshoumaru feared nothing and no one.

A single drop falls silently from the dark skies, rolling down the miko's sorrowful face. She momentarily cracks her eyes open and casts them upwards, realizing that a serene, relaxing downpour would soon be her new companion. She ponders over returning to her acquaintance's place, where she would certainly be safe and warm... but then again, she would not. Safe, maybe. Warm, never. The icy hands of death would always remain there, holding her in an anything-but-pleasant embrace.
Kikyou finally decides on staying at that very same place, fluttering her eyes closed once more. She wasn't needed back in the castle, anyway... or at least, not by him. No, he did not need her for anything. He would only endure her presence because of the child, because of her request to let the miko follow them. That little girl was probably the only one who cared and, as much as Kikyou hated to admit it, it wasn't enough for her. She wished for someone else to care, or at least not to be so much indifferent to her at times.
'Ridiculous. Pathetic. Useless...'
With those three words dwelling on her mind, the miko turns over uneasily and forces herself to fall asleep, as the gentle touch of the rain strokes her saddened features.

He had long since returned to the castle to check on the dear little human girl they all called Rin. But, she was missing; he checked everywhere, and there was no sign of her. Come to think of it, there was no sign of Jaken either, but it's not like anyone cared. The point of the matter was that Rin was missing, and Sesshoumaru was both frantic and furious.
She was not in the castle. She couldn't possibly be. There was no where she could have been within the establishment! Especially with he so attuned to her prescence. So, with his usual dead-pan, he set off.
First to check the gardens; no such luck. The glade was next; he found not a soul. Greatly worried by now, he made it to the side of the brook. Luckily, she was not there. The only two places in the immediate region of his domain to check was the forest and the bad-lands. He opted to check the first, first.
So off he sped, using his extreme agility to his advantage. Darting through the trees, by now hoarse, continuously called out her name, "RIN!"
It was then that he paused, wind-whipped and soaked. For not too far off in the distance, beneath a tree, was the miko who had earlier plagued his thoughts. At first, he considered approaching her, and stirring her from what appeared to be sleep. But then, his eyes narrowed. They might be acquaintances, yes, but who was to say she did not lure Rin to her, somehow?
He growled, his mind almost imediately registered this assumption to be true, his subconscious really not wanting to admit that Rin was most likely in far greater peril. He flexed his bony fingers, listening to the dlightfully sickening pops as he did so. And he continued to watch, waiting for Kikyou to give up the 'charade'.

That presence... his presence... It was so close...
She hated the effects that the arrogant taiyoukai had on her behavior, especially when they were alone; She felt uneasy, shaken, and even somewhat vulnerable. She had pondered over this for a few moons, never to find an acceptable reason for such thing. She did not hate the demon lord, nor did she fear him, for she was not one to be intimidated by a youkai. But if those were not the reasons...
...then why did his mere presence affect her so much, anyway?
She finally cracks her tired eyes open, only to stumble his narrow ones staring at her every move. With a questioning look on her face, she silently wonders what brought Sesshoumaru to that place at that time of the night.

"You there, miko," he barked, much harsher than even he intended. "Rin is missing. Know you of her whereabouts?"
It had long since begun to pour, and he stood there, single arm tucked neatly by his side, soaked, and in a rather foul-mood. But there was something beautiful about the rain; it made both the miko and the forest greenery far more attractive. Enough so, for him to not really regret the rain, despite it putting a damper on the over-all mood of his domain.
But Rin was his main concern and there was no time for him to be launching off into such reveries. The more time he wasted, the higher the chance became for her to be in grave danger. So, his fierce golden orbs narrowed further, to mere slits, almost, locking onto the miko, cool and calculating.

So there was his reason; he was only looking for the missing young girl. So feeble of her to even consider the possibility that there was something else behind his sudden appearance. So silly to even think we would be... Heh, never.
For one half moment, she feels disappointed. A rather unfamiliar feeling that was, and yet she could not help herself. Soon enough, though, she shrugs that uncalled for sentiment off, recalling what the demon standing before her had said before. It was quite late at night and no one knew of Rin, not even Sesshoumaru, who was always keeping an eye on her.
"I haven't seen her since a few moments before sunset." -Kikyou finally replies, concern reflecting clearly upon her pools. - "Is she not in the castle?"

His eyes suddenly softened, as if he finally realized that she could not possibly be the perpetrator. "No," he said quietly, shaking his neatly kept tresses, "She is not..."
Why had a stricken look crossed her face when he had told her, though? Of course, she would be worried about the child, but he couldn't shake off the feeling that it was something more. Shrugging, however, he managed to momentarily dismiss the thought, instead concentrating on the problem ahead. "I have searched the whole castle in it's entirety...And she is nowhere to be found...Come to think of it, neither is that insolent little toad, but that hardly matters..."
He paused in his speech, giving her a chance to reply if she so chose to. Meanwhile, he was critically eyeing the ever-growing torrent, his worry increasing by the moment. "The only places in this...immediate area...that I have not checked are this forest and...the badlands over yonder..."

Looking up at her acquaintance for a moment, she notices something different in his eyes. They hold an unusual tone of tenderness trying to hide behind his cold exterior. It was clear as the little droplets of rain running down her face and body that the sudden change on the demon lord's atittude was Rin's doing. After all, she was Sesshoumaru's only soft spot.
And she would probably always be.
Getting a hold of her bow, the miko quietly stands up and takes a brief scan around the area, in hopes to find the missing child. As she doesn't get any positive results, she looks back at the worried youkai and adds, in a somewhat comforting tone. - "She can't be too far from here. We should be able to find her soon enough if we do not waste any more time."

"You are quite right," his tone became cold once more, though not necessarily cruel, nor not necessarily even directed at her. "Let us go then, that is, if you intend to come along, as it appears,"
Rather swiftly, he darted off into the tangle of shrubbery, but not so quick as to lose her. He just hoped they both would be able to keep up this brisk pace for some time more. Of course, he had no doubt he could, of course, but what of the miko? Bah...What time was it to worry about her? Sure, it wouldn't be good if she could not keep up, but rin was far more important. But then, why could he not help but worry for the miko also? What if she slipped on the damp soil and injured that fragile body of hers?

The shrine maiden follows Sesshoumaru in her own pace, keeping herself as serene as one could be in such situation. She, of course, wanted to find the child and bring her to safety, but it was pointless to lose self; if anything, it would only make them vulnerable to possible assaults.
"...Can you catch her scent nearby?" -she pauses for a moment, brushing a few strands of soaked hair off her face. - "Anything?"

Sesshoumaru paused when he heard her begin to speak, so the wind currently whipping in his ears as he ran would not hinder his hearing. Turning around to momentarily face her, her found himself having to choke back a startled cry. Standing there, soaking wet, with that expression on her face, she somehow looked so...Ehhh....He quickly broke that train of thought. "No," he shook his head, some water flying as he did so. "All I can smell is wet dirt...It's really clogging up my senses..." he prudently left out she herself was included in the wet dirt category.
