"These creatures were my loyal and only friends for a long while, Sesshoumaru... And even though I no longer need their abilities to remain alive, I can't let you harm them. Besides," She returned his look, her own filled with sad resignation. "They can sense death following my path... It's only their youkai nature to also follow me."

"If you insist," He grumbled with a shake of his head, tossing his long mane of hair over his shoulder as he did so. "But they better not come near my castle... Or Rin," He grumped.

"Heh, you should not worry about that." She quickly looked away, her midnight black bangs shadowing her features as she muttered under her breath. "It's me they're following, so I don't think they will get a chance to come near your castle...for I shall stay away from that place for the time being..."

He glanced at her sharply. "You'll do no such thing," He growled, though his eyes softened in obvious concern. He averted his gaze, scratching his left cheek with one deft claw, even as a faint scarlet color made itself known. "... I'll... Just keep Rin inside, then."

"It's useless..." She sighed, her eyes fluttering closed. "As long as Naraku is aiming to take my life, it's not safe to stay around me... And, as much as it hurts me to keep away from little Rin-chan, I can't afford to risk her life like that..."

Sesshoumaru appeared torn. He shut his eyes in thought, lips falling flat into an expression devoid of emotion. What is right is not always easy... And what is easy is not always right. He would let her keep her distance, though it would pain him. But first... "Where will you go?"

"After Naraku." Her answer was quick and short, as though she had known exactly what to say even before Sesshoumaru questioned her next moves - and, in fact, she had. "I'll track him down and wait until the very moment he has the complete Shikon no Tama in hands. Only then I can purify his soul and sent him to the afterlife once and for all."
What she had neglected to mention, though, was that, once Naraku had been defeated, she would probably have to folow the same path as the hanyou fiend's.

He drew a shuddering breath, knowing what a defining moment in their relationship this was. His lashes fluttered for a moment before opening to reveal his stormy eyes, swirling with determination. He stepped forward, clasping both her hands between his, bringing them to rest just above his heart. "No..." He exhaled, form slumping somewhat. "I can't let you go alone, Kikyou... This isn't just your battle, anymore... Rin will be fine in Jaken's care. I'm coming with you."

Her eyes widened in a mix of surprise and contentment. Of course she had wanted him to come along, but there was a small part of her that wondered if that would really be the wise thing to do. When the time for destroying Naraku finally came, would the demon lord be ready to witness her death as well..? Furthermore, would hesitation and fear of leaving him alone come in her way and render her efforts useless...?
"If you come with me," Kikyou said in a whisper, feeling her throat clench. "You'll be forced to leave Rin behind, and you were never too keen on doing such a thing... And you also might have to come across scenes you probably do not want to watch..." She took a brief pause and collected her breath, mahogany shyly fixed on golden. "Are you sure you still want to come with me...?"

His chest rumbled in a sigh as he stepped closer still, resting his chin in the crook of her shoulder. "Rin is a big girl," He admitted, after a moment. "Perhaps I have been too protective of her in the past... Besides, I'm coming back..." He trailed off, eyes hardening. "And so will you."

The sorrowful miko let her own head rest atop his, her arms cast around his strong form. How she longed for his words to be true, longed to believe she would be coming back to her beloved ones... Given the present course of events, though, it all seemed rather impossible. "Promise me I'll be in your memories...just in case I..." She was unable to finish her sentence, for that agonizing feeling had made her throat clench yet again.

"You won't," He swallowed, voice thick with an unusual display of emotion. "...'Sides," His gruffness returned. "I don't need something tragic happening to you for you to be in my thoughts... koishii."

A sigh of sheer relief escaped her lips at the sound of that single, lovely word, her gentle grip on him growing tight. "That's all I need to know...." A shy smile graced her features and Kikyou cuddled up to his warm embrace, now certain she had made the right choice.
And perhaps she would manage to stay alive... for him.

He lifted his head from off her shoulder to place a feather-light kiss on her cheek. "You underestimate me, besides," He smiled, albeit weakly.

"In this case," In return for his ever so rare smile, her own widened somewhat, forehead resting against his chin. "I apologize for underestimating the great lord of the Western Lands..."
